This is particularly important if you are replacing or extending a driveway, as impermeable surfaces over a certain area may require planning permission.

Permitted development rights are not universal, though: they do not apply to flats and maisonettes, and they can be removed by an Article 4 direction or a planning condition, which is common on newer estates.
