Frequently Asked Questions
How thick should a concrete garage base be? +
For a standard domestic garage, a concrete base should be a minimum of 100mm (4 inches) thick, with thickened edges of around 150mm for added strength. For heavier loads such as commercial vehicles or HGVs, we recommend 150–200mm throughout. We assess each site individually to advise the correct specification.
How long does a concrete base take to cure before use? +
Concrete reaches initial set within 24–48 hours, but full structural strength develops over 28 days. We recommend waiting at least 7 days before placing any structures on the base, and 28 days before heavy vehicle loads. We'll advise you on the timeline based on weather conditions at the time of the pour.
Do I need planning permission for a concrete base? +
In most cases, a concrete base for a shed, garage, or outbuilding falls under permitted development rights and does not require planning permission — provided the structure it supports also falls within those rights. However, rules vary by location and property type. We recommend checking with your local council before proceeding.
What size concrete base do I need for my shed or garage? +
The base should match or slightly exceed the footprint of your building. For example, a 10x8ft shed typically needs a 10x8ft or slightly larger base. For garages, we add a small overhang to provide a clean edge. See our pricing page for a full size guide.
