Frequently Asked Questions
What is boarding out for a garage or outbuilding? +
Boarding out refers to lining the interior walls and ceiling of a garage, workshop, or outbuilding with ply panels and insulation. It transforms a raw, unfinished structure into a warmer, more functional space with a clean appearance — suitable for use as a home office, gym, workshop, or additional room.
Will boarding out make my garage significantly warmer? +
Yes. Adding insulation and boarding significantly reduces heat loss through uninsulated metal or concrete walls. Combined with an insulated door, the result is a noticeably warmer environment that retains heat far better in winter and stays cooler in summer. This makes it far more comfortable for extended use.
What type of board do you use? +
We primarily use high-quality plywood for its strength, smooth finish, and ease of painting or fixing shelving to. We can discuss alternative materials or finishes based on how you intend to use the space. All materials are sourced for durability and suitability for outbuilding environments.
Do I need planning permission to board out my garage? +
Boarding and insulating an existing garage or outbuilding is generally considered internal works and does not require planning permission. However, that is different from a conversion: if you are turning the garage into a habitable room such as a bedroom, office or living space, building regulations approval is required, not optional. The main exception is a detached garage under 30m² (or under 15m² if built of combustible material) with no sleeping accommodation, which can be exempt. We can advise based on your specific plans.
